Biodiversity Inventories

Proportionally, island ecosystems support more biodiversity than their respective mainlands, and as such are a focus for global biodiversity preservation. A big part of our efforts focus on documenting biodiversity at offshore islands and their habitats. The Grenadine islands are important for supporting species that were formerly more widespread on mainland islands, and these islands provide refuge from invasive and introduced mammal species.

We frequently conduct rapid assessments, bio-blitz surveys and photographic inventories while at the offshore islands. On occasion, this includes aerial drone surveys  to document habitat type. We often collaborate with regional experts to identify species and classify habitat types. This information has been fed into national planning mechanisms, such as through environmental impact assessments, marine protected area management planning, regional species identification guides and national ecosystem assessments.
